Salt Creek Falls drops 286 feet in a single plunge into a natural rock basin in the Willamette National Forest, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Oregon. The viewing deck at the rim is wheelchair accessible and just steps from the parking area, which means you can get the full view without a technical hike. But the better view requires more effort.
The trail along the canyon rim descends steeply to a direct head-on viewpoint that shows the full 286 feet without the rim intervening. From this lower vantage point the scale becomes clearer: the falls are wider at the top and narrow as they fall, the spray at the base substantial enough to wet you from twenty feet away when the river is running full.
Salt Creek Falls is located about 22 miles east of Oakridge on Highway 58 near Willamette Pass. The waterfall is on Salt Creek, a tributary of the Middle Fork Willamette River. The campground nearby fills in summer, so arriving early or having a reservation is advisable.
The loop trail extends further to include views into the canyon and access to a junction for Diamond Creek Falls, which adds 3.75 miles for those wanting a longer day. The combination of height, accessibility, and the quality of the surrounding forest makes Salt Creek Falls one of the better waterfall destinations in Oregon for visitors who want to actually stand near the base of what they came to see.
